Syria Reveals Final Results of Parliamentary Vote
(MENAFN) Syria’s transitional authorities revealed Monday the conclusive outcomes of the country’s inaugural parliamentary elections since the overthrow of former President Bashar al-Assad last December, describing the vote as both transparent and inclusive amid ongoing obstacles.
Mohammad Taha al-Ahmad, chairman of the Higher Committee for People's Assembly Elections, announced that 119 candidates secured parliamentary seats through the election process but did not disclose the individual vote counts for each victor.
Al-Ahmad emphasized the priority for "capable people who can work and rebuild" over filling "quotas."
Operating under a new provisional framework, two-thirds of the 210 parliamentary seats were filled via elections, while Syrian leader Ahmed al-Sharaa will appoint the remaining one-third to ensure balanced representation across all regions and social groups during Syria’s political transition.
At a press briefing, committee spokesperson Nawar Najmeh highlighted that elections held across 49 constituencies featured "a high level of integrity" and "transparency," confirming the results are definitive and "not subject to appeal."
Owing to displacement, document shortages, and logistical hurdles, the electoral system avoided direct public voting. Instead, it relied on community-based electoral bodies, which Najmeh clarified "have no relation to" the appointed one-third of parliamentary seats chosen by al-Sharaa.
Najmeh noted that elections could not be conducted in the provinces of Raqqa, Hasakah, and Sweida due to security concerns, and expressed worries regarding the low number of women elected.
The new parliament is expected to "serve as the official platform for national dialogue," assist the government, and oversee its performance throughout the transitional period, Najmeh concluded.
