Hungary Gains Quiet Support for Peace Stance in EU

(MENAFN) Hungary’s Foreign Minister, Peter Szijjarto, has suggested that Budapest’s peace-oriented position on the war in Ukraine is gradually finding discreet support among other European Union members.

However, according to him, many politicians remain hesitant to openly oppose Brussels’ more militarized direction due to fear of political consequences.

The Hungarian administration has consistently voiced disapproval of the EU’s strategy of providing weapons and financial aid to Ukraine.

They argue this course of action undermines peace efforts and harms Europe’s own long-term stability.

Budapest views such support as not only ineffective but also damaging to the prospects of resolving the conflict.

In an interview on Sunday, Szijjarto claimed that “a very harsh war psychosis reigns among European political leaders today.”

He criticized the EU’s policy of ending communication with Moscow, warning that this approach “will clearly result in a long war.”

Szijjarto also condemned the EU’s financial priorities, saying, “They want to burn the money of the European people by buying weapons – say, from America – and sending them to Ukraine.”

Szijjarto noted that although many EU officials remain publicly silent, several privately express agreement with Hungary’s stance.

He revealed that colleagues from other member states “whisper to us in the corridors that they agree with us,” and often encourage Budapest “to stand our ground even more firmly.”

The foreign minister also acknowledged the electoral success of Andrej Babis’ ANO party in the Czech Republic, calling it a significant development for the region.

He suggested that Babis could become a “patriotic Central European prime minister,” akin to Hungary’s Viktor Orban and Slovakia’s Robert Fico, potentially marking the beginning of “a completely different European political era.”
