Blizzard Leaves Nearly 1,000 Stranded on Tibetan Everest Side
(MENAFN) Nearly 1,000 people were stranded on the Tibetan side of Mount Everest over the weekend after a sudden blizzard blocked access roads and caused tents to collapse, Chinese state media reported Sunday.
The storm began Friday evening and continued through Saturday, dumping heavy snow across the region at altitudes above 4,900 meters (16,000 feet), making travel impossible. Local authorities quickly launched a large-scale rescue effort, dispatching hundreds of villagers and emergency workers to clear the deep snow and assist those trapped, according to media.
Officials reported that several campers exhibited symptoms of hypothermia due to the severe weather, underscoring the urgent need for medical assistance in the harsh conditions.
The rescue operation is ongoing as teams work to restore access and ensure the safety of all stranded individuals.
