Shooting Leaves Two Dead, Dozen Injured in U.S. Alabama
(MENAFN) Two people were killed and at least 12 others injured Saturday night after gunmen opened fire in a busy downtown district in Montgomery, Alabama, during a violent clash, local media reported Sunday.
Montgomery Police Chief James Graboys confirmed that three of the victims sustained life-threatening injuries. Authorities were alerted to the scene around 11:30 p.m. local time, where they responded to what Graboys described as a "mass shooting," as reported by media.
"This was two parties involved that were basically shooting at each other in the middle of a crowd," Graboys told the press. He emphasized the reckless nature of the shooting, noting that the gunmen showed no regard for the innocent bystanders around them.
Investigators are currently sifting through evidence and speaking to potential witnesses and suspects, with Graboys vowing that authorities would "do whatever we need to do ... to charge and hold the people responsible who were involved in this." As of Sunday morning, no arrests had been made.
The tragic incident occurred on a bustling evening in Montgomery's tourist zone, just after a football game between Tuskegee University and Morehouse College, according to media.
Media reported that among the injured were two juveniles, one of whom is in critical condition. The identities of the deceased have not been disclosed, though authorities confirmed that at least one of the victims is a woman. Further details regarding the second fatality have yet to be revealed.
"We're going to use every resource we have to bring all those involved in this injustice," said Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed.
