Philippine Supreme court postpones elections
(MENAFN) The Philippine Supreme Court has effectively postponed the first parliamentary elections in Muslim Mindanao by ruling two regional laws unconstitutional, local media reported Wednesday.
The court declared Bangsamoro Autonomy Acts 58 and 77 invalid, which were intended to establish parliamentary districts in the region, and directed the Commission on Elections to conduct elections by March 31, 2026, according to Rappler.
Originally scheduled for 2022, the elections were first delayed to May this year, then moved to October, and are now postponed again.
The Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) was officially established in January 2019 after a referendum approved the Bangsamoro Organic Law, following decades of resistance led by the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) under Haji Murad Ebrahim.
Ebrahim was appointed interim chief minister of BARMM by then-President Rodrigo Duterte in February 2019, with Abdulraof Macacua taking over the role earlier this year. The region is home to roughly 5 million people, most of whom are Muslim.
