Zelenskyy Presses EU to Open “Fundamentals” Cluster in Accession Talks
(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Wednesday called on the European Union to advance the “Fundamentals” cluster in accession negotiations, underscoring that Kyiv had completed its internal review of EU legislation faster than any previous candidate.
“We did it well. We are fully ready to open Cluster 1 in the EU membership talks – the ‘Fundamentals’ cluster. We need real progress on this,” Zelenskyy declared on Telegram, adding that he had notified participants at the European Council.
He stressed that Ukraine’s efforts are part of a broader regional push, highlighting Moldova’s reaffirmed commitment to Europe and the Western Balkan states’ deserving status to join the EU.
“Europe has to keep its promises – just as candidate countries do their part,” Zelenskyy insisted, emphasizing Ukraine’s expectation for tangible outcomes.
Ukraine formally launched EU accession talks in June after securing candidate status in 2022 amid the ongoing war with Russia. Moldova holds candidate status as well, while several Western Balkan nations remain at various phases of the enlargement process.
