Somalia’s Parliament Endorses African Charter on Child Rights, Welfare
(MENAFN) Somalia’s federal parliament formally approved the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child on Wednesday during a session held in Mogadishu.
The meeting was overseen by Sheikh Adan Mohamed Noor Madobe, Speaker of the Lower House, with 145 members of parliament present.
According to a statement from the Speaker’s office, the vote concluded with 130 lawmakers supporting the treaty, 10 opposing, and five abstaining.
This ratification marks a crucial step forward in strengthening legal protections for children throughout the Horn of Africa.
With Somalia’s endorsement, it becomes the 52nd African nation to ratify this important regional human rights agreement. Only Morocco, South Sudan, and Tunisia remain among African Union members that have yet to ratify the Charter.
Initially adopted by the Organization of African Unity (OAU)—the predecessor to the African Union in 1990—the Charter requires member states to protect children’s rights, shielding them from abuse and guaranteeing access to education and healthcare.
