Strike Erupts in Greece Against Labor Bill
(MENAFN) Employees and public sector workers throughout Greece organized a 24-hour countrywide strike on Wednesday to oppose a recently proposed labor law.
According to unions, this legislation threatens to weaken the rights of workers.
The protest, initiated by the General Confederation of Greek Workers (GSEE) and the Civil Servants' Confederation (ADEDY), drew thousands of participants to the streets of Athens and other key cities, as reported by a daily newspaper.
Demonstrators voiced their opposition to the government's suggested regulations on working hours, advocating instead for reduced working time and the complete reinstatement of unrestricted collective bargaining.
The central slogan at the demonstration in Athens declared, "Working time is not a commodity - It is our life," as marchers proceeded toward Syntagma Square, directly in front of the parliament building.
Union representatives criticized the draft law, arguing that it favors profits at the expense of human dignity and may lead to increased job insecurity.
The strike caused widespread interruptions to public transportation, education, and various other government services throughout Greece.
