Dr Stauffer has a PhD in Botany and is the curator of the flowering plants herbarium at the Geneva Botanical Gardens. His scientific and administrative tasks in the herbarium include curation of part of the Monocotyledon collections.

Dr Stauffer's main research interests are in palm taxonomy, floristics, ethnobotany and conservation, largely in Africa. He is currently researching the collections gathered by Humboldt and Bonpland in the Neotropics and the palm collections represented in the Carl von Martius herbarium.

He is a co-leader of the academic course, 'Scientific Research in Botanical Collections'.
