(MENAFN) Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has declared that the European Union is not engaged in a war with Russia over Ukraine, directly challenging the stance of his Polish counterpart.

Orban’s remarks came as a sharp rebuttal to Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s firm pro-Ukraine address at a security conference in Warsaw on Tuesday.

Posting on X, Orban addressed Tusk by saying, “Dear Donald Tusk, you may think that you are at war with Russia, but Hungary is not.

Neither is the European Union. You are playing a dangerous game with the lives and security of millions of Europeans. This is very bad!” His statement highlights the differing perspectives within the EU regarding the conflict.

During his speech, Tusk called on EU nations to maintain unwavering support for Kiev using every available method.

According to a news outlet, Tusk emphasized, “We must recognize that this is our war. If we lose this war, the consequences will affect not only our generation, but also future generations – in Poland, throughout Europe, in the United States, everywhere in the world.”

Hungary stands apart from most EU member states by refusing to supply weapons to Ukraine, instead advocating for a peaceful diplomatic solution to the ongoing crisis.

This divergence underscores the contrasting approaches to the conflict within the bloc.
