Earthquake results in sixty deaths, dozens harmed in Philippines
(MENAFN) A local news reported on Wednesday, that the Cebu region of the Philippines was hit by a major 6.9-magnitude earthquake that killed at least 61 people and left more than 140 wounded.
According to the Inquirer, the earthquake hit at 9:59 p.m. Tuesday (1359 GMT). The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported that its epicenter was only 5 kilometers (3 miles) deep and located 21 kilometers (13 miles) northeast of Bogo City.
The US Geological Survey originally logged the earthquake as a magnitude 7.0 event, though this was subsequently modified to a lower figure.
According to local officials, 27 people died in Bogo City, while the other deaths were recorded in San Remigio and various towns situated close to the epicenter.
However, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center stated that there was no major risk of a tsunami.
Rescue and search teams are already at the scene in the impacted areas, as aftershocks still happening in the region.
Authorities are concerned that the number of fatalities may increase.
