Almost seventy individuals die due to earthquake in Philippines
(MENAFN) The death toll from a powerful 6.9-magnitude earthquake that struck the Cebu region of the Philippines has risen to 69, with dozens more injured, according to reports.
Authorities reported that the fatalities included 30 in Bogo City, 22 in San Remigio, 10 in Medellin, five in Tabogon, and one each in Sogod and Tabuelan.
The quake occurred at 9:59 p.m. local time on Tuesday and was centered 21 kilometers northeast of Bogo City at a shallow depth of 5 kilometers. Initial readings by the U.S. Geological Survey reported a magnitude of 7.0 before revising it downward. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center confirmed there was no significant tsunami threat.
Search and rescue teams have already arrived in the hardest-hit areas, though aftershocks continue, and officials warned that the death toll could still increase.
The earthquake caused widespread structural damage. A sports complex in northern Cebu collapsed during a basketball game, resulting in multiple casualties. The St. Peter and Paul Church on Bantayan Island also fell, and a fast-food outlet in Bogo partially collapsed.
