Italy Evacuates Fifteen Children from Gaza for Urgent Medial Care
(MENAFN) Italy has successfully evacuated another group of severely ill children from the Gaza Strip, along with their families, according to the country's Defense Ministry on Tuesday.
The ministry confirmed that 15 children in need of urgent medical care, accompanied by their relatives, were flown to Italy aboard three C-130J aircraft from the Italian Air Force. They arrived at Ciampino, Lecce, and Verona airports and are now set to receive treatment in Italian hospitals.
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani emphasized Italy’s unwavering commitment to aiding those affected by the ongoing conflict in Gaza. "Italy stands on the 'front line' in supporting those suffering from the war," Tajani told media, the Italian news agency.
Tajani also commented on the ongoing voyage of the Global Sumud Flotilla, which is heading towards Gaza with food supplies. “I hope nothing happens. I spoke with the Israeli foreign minister and stressed that no violence must be used against Italians or anyone else. I reminded him that there are Italian parliamentarians aboard,” Tajani said.
Furthermore, Tajani expressed Italy's readiness to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid to civilians in Gaza, underscoring the country’s position in ensuring the supplies reach their destination. "They still have time to change their minds and deliver the supplies elsewhere in the Mediterranean. If they are stopped or detained, we will help them and ensure they return to Italy as soon as possible,” he added.
With the latest evacuations, the total number of sick and wounded Palestinian children flown to Italy for treatment now stands at 196. Including family members, the overall count of evacuees has reached 650, the ministry confirmed.
The situation in Gaza remains dire. The Israeli military's ongoing bombardment has resulted in over 66,000 Palestinian deaths since October 2023, most of them women and children. The relentless violence has left the enclave in ruins, causing widespread starvation and the spread of diseases.
