Far-Right Israeli Minister Condemns Trump’s Gaza Proposal
(MENAFN) Israel’s far-right Finance Minister, Bezalel Smotrich, harshly criticized a peace initiative revealed by US President Donald Trump on Tuesday, describing it as a "tragedy" and a failure of the Benjamin Netanyahu administration.
Smotrich expressed on the US social media platform X that, in his opinion, the plan “is also going to end in tears,” warning that Israeli children “will be forced to fight in Gaza again.”
He referenced Albert Einstein’s definition of folly, calling the peace approach “pure stupidity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.”
Smotrich was referring to the two-state solution, the establishment of Palestinian police forces trained in Egypt and Jordan, and the involvement of Qatar as a mediator in the ceasefire talks.
The extremist minister further criticized Netanyahu’s support for Trump’s proposal and what he labeled as Netanyahu’s “initial unwillingness to occupy Gaza.”
Smotrich also condemned the “absurd celebrations” surrounding the plan, calling it “a tragedy of leadership fleeing from the truth.”
On Monday, Trump announced a detailed 20-point proposal aimed at ending the conflict in Gaza during a joint press event with Netanyahu at the White House.
The framework includes the release of all Israeli hostages in return for the freedom of numerous Palestinian detainees, the complete disarmament of Hamas, a phased withdrawal of Israeli troops, and the creation of a technocratic and non-political Palestinian committee to govern the territory.
