Singapore bars entry for HK runaway pro-democracy activist
(MENAFN) A Hong Kong pro-democracy campaigner, who escaped Hohng Kong, was barred from entering Singapore, despite having a visa, after the city-state declared that his presence "would not be in national interests."
On Saturday, Nathan Law, an exiled figure residing in the UK, traveled to Singapore for a "closed-door, invitation-only" conference, only to be held at the border for four hours upon his arrival.
He said to the BBC "I was not asked questions and they did not give reason for the denial."
Singapore's Ministry of Home Affairs stated that Hong Kong authorities are seeking Mr. Law for allegedly endangering national security.
There is an extradition treaty in place between Singapore and Hong Kong.
In response to inquiries from the BBC, the ministry's representative stated that "Mr Law's entry into and presence in the country would not be in Singapore's national interests."
He stated that "A visa holder is still subject to further checks at point of entry into the country.
That is what happened with Nathan Law," and added that Mr. Law was sent for "questioning, and immigration and security assessment" following his arrival.
