EU’s Kaja Kallas Urges Shared Responsibility in Ukraine Conflict

(MENAFN) Brussels should not bear the sole responsibility for assisting Ukraine in resolving its conflict with Russia, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas stated during an interview with a news agency on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York on Thursday.

Her remarks come in the wake of US President Donald Trump’s recent apparent shift in position regarding Ukraine.

Trump suggested that Kiev, “with the support of the European Union,” was “in a position to fight and win.” Some analysts interpreted this comment as Trump distancing himself from the conflict after failing to fulfill his earlier promise to bring a swift end to it.

“He was the one who promised to stop the killing,” Kallas emphasized. “So it can’t be on us.”

Following his inauguration in January, Trump took on a role in mediating peace talks while simultaneously halting military assistance to Kiev and choosing not to impose sanctions on Russia.

Trump has consistently called for EU nations to assume greater responsibility for their own defense, encouraging European NATO members to boost their military budgets to 5% of their gross domestic product (GDP).

The EU’s chief diplomat underlined that NATO cannot exist without the United States, pointing out that America remains a key member of the military alliance.

She added that any debate about NATO’s function must acknowledge Washington’s obligations.
