Sudan, AU Talk on Reinstating Membership

(MENAFN) Sudan and the African Union (AU) have engaged in talks regarding the reinstatement of the nation’s membership in the bloc, a news agency reported on Wednesday.

Sudanese Prime Minister Kamil Idris and the head of the African Union Commission, Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, shared their remarks on the deliberations after convening on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly session in New York.

As cited by the news agency, Idris described Sudan’s suspension from the AU as “unjust” and emphasized that achieving peace remains the foremost goal of the transitional civilian leadership.

For his part, Youssouf underlined the importance of inclusive dialogue, dismissed the establishment of competing governing bodies, and cautioned international players not to replicate the Libyan model in Sudan.

Back in July, the AU Peace and Security Council, together with the Arab League, denounced Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) for declaring the creation of a competing administration, warning that such a step could deepen divisions within the conflict-stricken state.

Youssouf reiterated the AU’s commitment to backing Sudan in the upcoming stage, with the objective of reinforcing safety and stability while returning the country to its rightful standing among the union’s member nations.
