UN Chief, Syrian Leader Hold Talks on Syria's Political Future

(MENAFN) UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres met with Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa on Wednesday to discuss Syria’s ongoing political transition, according to a statement released by Guterres' office.

During the talks, Guterres emphasized the urgency of advancing the transition through a process that ensures inclusivity and wide-ranging participation.

"The Secretary-General also emphasized the importance of promoting Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity," the statement read, further noting that he raised alarms over "violations of the 1974 Disengagement Agreement."

The two leaders also discussed strengthening collaboration between the United Nations and Syria, while exchanging perspectives on broader developments in the Middle East.

The meeting marks a pivotal moment in Syria's post-Assad era. Former President Bashar Assad, who led the country for nearly a quarter century, fled to Russia in December, effectively ending the Baath Party's decades-long rule dating back to 1963.

Following Assad’s departure, Al-Sharaa assumed office in January, heading a transitional government. His recent address to the UN General Assembly made him the first Syrian president to speak at the body since 1967.
