A delegation of nine young South African scientists represented the nation at the 10th BRICS Young Scientists’ Forum (YSF), taking place in Brasilia, Brazil, from 15 to 17 September 2025. The delegates were selected through the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI) and the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf) from a highly competitive field of 256 applications submitted by over 46 institutions across South Africa.

The BRICS YSF was first established following a consensus reached at the 2nd BRICS Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) Ministerial Meeting, held in Brasilia in March 2015. The forum has since gained significant traction and is now hosted annually by the nation holding the BRICS presidency.

The 2025 BRICS Foum was focused on addressing critical global challenges through three key thematic areas:
• Research on Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation: Contributing perspectives from BRICS nations towards the 30th Conference of the Parties on Climate Change (COP30).
• Science Diplomacy in a Changing World: Showcasing the views of BRICS and the Global South on the international stage.
• Artificial Intelligence for Societal Solutions. Exploring how emerging technologies can enhance the lives of citizens within BRICS countries.

The BRICS YSF is a premier platform for expanding scientific cooperation among young researchers and scientists from member countries. It seeks to promote initiatives and build a robust system of international collaboration among the next generation of STI leaders. These efforts are crucial for ensuring the sustainable development of BRICS cooperation and consolidating its leadership in global STI.

The South African delegation comprises:
• Dr Beauty Shibiri (University of Limpopo)
• Dr Babalwa Tyabashe Phume (Stellenbosch University)
• Dr Rejoice Phetha (University of Zululand)
• Dr Agnes Akwa Nde (Rhodes University)
• Dr Calyton Vhumbunu (University of the Free State)
• Dr Sean Perry (AMD Solutions)
• Dr William Vambe (Walter Sisulu University)
• Dr Bopaki Phogole (University of Johannesburg)
• Dr Sinalo Mani (Agricultural Research Council)

The delegation was chaperoned by Dr Tebogo Mabotha from ASSAf. The Forum aims to provide young scientists with opportunities to share their experiences, discuss incentives and constraints, and explore opportunities in education, research, and entrepreneurship within science and engineering. It plays a pivotal role in cultivating a cohort of innovative thinkers prepared to drive progress in their fields and contribute to the broader advancement of knowledge and society.

Key objectives of the BRICS YSF include:
• Enhancing interaction among young BRICS researchers to consolidate knowledge for addressing common societal challenges.
• Promoting skills and research development for young scientists across the bloc.
• Strengthening BRICS’s international role in STI by supporting youth with high potential to accelerate innovation.
• Encouraging the development of transnational research networks and partnerships to drive innovation and advance scientific knowledge.
• Informing and strengthening BRICS STI and youth policies, while enhancing skills and fostering entrepreneurial principles.
