Somali Leader states his nation willing to facilitate Ethiopia, Egypt dialogue
(MENAFN) According to reports, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud expressed his country’s readiness to play a mediating role in the ongoing discussions between Ethiopia, Egypt, and Sudan concerning the use and management of Nile water resources.
In remarks given during an interview on Tuesday, Mohamud voiced clear support for the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), describing it as the largest hydropower project on the continent and emphasizing that it “will have a great impact on the Ethiopian economy and the region as a whole.”
He explained that Somalia is prepared to assist all parties in reaching an understanding. “During the opening ceremony, I confirmed that Somalia is ready to support both sides, Egypt and Ethiopia, as well as Sudan, to understand each other,” the president said.
Mohamud also highlighted that Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed had shown a willingness to engage with any stakeholders who hold concerns about the project. Despite objections raised by Egypt and Sudan, the Somali leader underscored that his country’s diplomatic approach remains impartial. He reassured that Somalia’s cooperation with Ethiopia does not undermine its relationship with Cairo, adding: “Somalis live in peace with themselves and with the whole world.”
