France Hails Syria-Jordan-U.S. Roadmap to Address Suwayda Crisis
(MENAFN) France on Wednesday voiced strong support for a new plan endorsed by Syria, Jordan, and the United States aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict in Syria’s Suwayda province, describing it as an "encouraging first step toward long-term de-escalation."
In an official statement, the French Foreign Ministry emphasized the urgent need to translate this agreement into immediate, tangible results on the ground.
"We call for continuing the dialogue in order for the roadmap to be implemented on the ground as quickly as possible," the statement said.
The statement further stressed that all diplomatic efforts must prioritize "the preservation of security, Syria’s territorial integrity and the protection of all civilian populations."
Türkiye’s Foreign Ministry also expressed its approval of the roadmap.
"We welcome the roadmap announced with the aim of preserving calm, ensuring stability and preventing renewed conflict in Suwayda, one of Syria's southern provinces," the ministry declared early Wednesday.
Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani unveiled the seven-step roadmap Tuesday following discussions in Damascus with Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi and US envoy to Syria Tom Barrack.
Speaking at a news conference, al-Shaibani outlined that the plan aims to guarantee uninterrupted humanitarian and medical aid to Suwayda, restore vital services to enable daily life to resume, and deploy local security forces to safeguard transportation routes and facilitate mobility.
The roadmap also intends to compensate victims, support the return of displaced residents, determine the fate of missing persons, launch a comprehensive reconciliation process inclusive of all provincial communities, and ensure accountability for “all those whose hands are stained with assaults on civilians and their property,” he stated.
Suwayda has been under a ceasefire since July 19 after a week of violent clashes involving Druze groups, Bedouin tribes, and Israeli military strikes.
