Yemen Applauds UN Move to Relocate HQ to Aden

(MENAFN) The Yemeni government on Tuesday praised the United Nations' decision to relocate the headquarters of its Resident Coordinator in Yemen from the Houthi-controlled capital, Sanaa, to the southern port city of Aden.

In an official statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs called the move "a fundamental step" aimed at enhancing collaboration between UN bodies and Yemeni state institutions. The shift is also expected to improve the delivery of humanitarian aid throughout Yemen, which has been ravaged by years of conflict.

"The Ministry encourages all agencies, funds, and programs of the United Nations to follow suit and move their country representatives to Aden," the statement added.

The Yemeni government reaffirmed its dedication to working closely with UN humanitarian and development agencies to ensure that aid continues to reach those in need across the country. Additionally, it emphasized the importance of safeguarding the safety of UN personnel and aid workers "in accordance with international humanitarian law and the privileges and immunities granted to the UN."

The Yemeni foreign ministry also condemned the ongoing detention of numerous humanitarian staff by the Houthi militia, calling for their "immediate and unconditional release."

This follows a strong condemnation from the UN Security Council on Friday regarding the recent detention of UN personnel by the Houthis in Yemen.

According to UN Special Envoy to Yemen Hans Grundberg, at least 11 UN staff members were detained in Sanaa and Hodeidah last month, bringing the total number of UN staff held in northern Yemen to 34.

Since late 2014, the Houthis have controlled Sanaa and much of northern Yemen in an ongoing conflict with the Yemeni government. The situation has contributed to what the UN has described as one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises.
