Trump Extends TikTok’s Deadline Until December 16
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Tuesday granting TikTok a three-month reprieve, extending the deadline for its potential ban in the United States until December 16, according to The Tech Portal.
This move marks the third delay in the enforcement of restrictions originally set to take effect on January 19, one day before Trump was due to leave office. The extension follows the expiration of the previous deadline on September 17.
The decision comes as Washington and Beijing appear to have reached a preliminary agreement regarding the future of TikTok's operations in the US. While specifics remain under wraps, US officials have indicated that the deal would see control of TikTok’s US arm transferred to an investment group led by American companies. The full details are expected to be finalized after Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping speak by phone on September 19.
Trump confirmed on Tuesday that a "group" of US firms will acquire TikTok, thus preventing the app from being banned in the US.
In a related update, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent revealed on Monday that negotiators had reached a framework deal regarding the app’s ownership, with Trump and Xi set to discuss and approve the agreement on Friday.
