Canadian PM Set to Visit Mexico to Cement Bilateral Ties
(MENAFN) Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is scheduled to travel to Mexico City later this week to enhance bilateral ties and bolster prosperity across North America, his office announced on Tuesday.
Carney’s trip, scheduled for September 18-19, will include a key meeting with Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum. The discussions will center on critical areas such as "security, infrastructure, investment, energy, and trade," a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office detailed.
Emphasizing the significance of the summit, the statement said the leaders aim "to elevate and broaden the bilateral relationship." It added, "This visit will further strengthen our relationship and deliver greater prosperity and security for our workers and businesses."
Highlighting Canada’s strategic approach, the statement noted, "Canada's new government is diversifying and strengthening its trade relationships with reliable partners to create high-paying careers, grow our industries, secure new markets, and build more resilient supply chains."
Carney praised the "strong" bond between the two nations, stating, "Together, we will build stronger supply chains, create new opportunities for workers, and deliver greater prosperity and certainty for both Canadians and Mexicans."
The visit comes amid growing tensions from U.S. President Donald Trump, whose tariff threats have pushed both Canada and Mexico to seek closer cooperation.
Earlier, on August 5, President Sheinbaum met with Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand and Minister of Finance and National Revenue François-Philippe Champagne in Mexico City.
Sheinbaum has also voiced her readiness to expand trade and direct investment between the two countries, signaling a continued commitment to deepen economic ties.
