China’s Macao SAR Election Underway

(MENAFN) The election for the eighth Legislative Assembly of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China commenced on Sunday, according to media.

Polling stations opened at 9 am local time (0100GMT) and will remain open until 9 pm, with initial results expected early on Monday.

The new legislature will feature 33 seats, distributed as follows: 14 through direct elections, 12 via indirect elections, and 7 appointed by the Macao SAR’s chief executive within 15 days after receiving final results.

Voters can cast ballots at 37 locations, including 38 polling stations for direct voting and five for indirect voting.

The Legislative Assembly serves as Macao SAR’s primary legislative body, with members being permanent residents. Legislative terms run for four years, though the inaugural term had different provisions.

In 2024, Macao SAR amended its Legislative Assembly Election Law to enhance the candidate vetting process, reinforcing the principle of "patriots administering Macao" within the legal framework.
