France Sends Three Fighter Jets to Bolster Poland's Airspace Security
(MENAFN) French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Thursday that France will send three Rafale fighter jets to bolster Poland's air defense in the wake of recent drone incursions. The move aligns with France's commitment to protect NATO's Eastern Flank alongside its allies.
"I have also discussed this matter with the NATO Secretary General (Mark Rutte) and with the British Prime Minister (Keir Starmer), who is likewise engaged in the defense of the Eastern Flank," Macron said in a statement on the US social media platform X. "The security of the European continent is our top priority. We will not yield to Russia’s growing intimidation."
The decision came after Poland's government called for an urgent UN Security Council meeting and imposed sweeping flight restrictions along its eastern border with Belarus and Ukraine. These measures follow heightened concerns about security in Poland following a drone incident on Wednesday that raised alarms across the NATO member state.
In a statement, Russia’s Defense Ministry acknowledged carrying out a significant drone strike targeting military sites in western Ukraine but denied that Polish territory was the target.
In a further sign of solidarity, Germany also confirmed it would enhance its security support for Poland following the recent escalation.
