Germany Denounces Russian Strikes on Ukraine
(MENAFN) Germany's Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has strongly denounced a new wave of massive Russian airstrikes against Ukraine and drone incursions into Poland, vowing that European nations will escalate sanctions to increase pressure on Moscow.
Speaking at a joint press conference with his Dutch counterpart in Berlin, Wadephul stated that even after three years, Russia has shown no willingness to pursue peace. "Even after three years, Moscow is still not prepared to negotiate seriously for peace. On the contrary, the Kremlin wants to subjugate Ukraine by force. We must and will respond to this with a clear answer," Wadephul said.
He confirmed that Germany and its European allies are united in their commitment to providing robust support to Kyiv to bolster its defenses against Russian aggression. The immediate focus, he explained, is on tightening economic restrictions.
"At the same time, we must significantly increase sanctions pressure. We are in complete agreement on this. That is our goal for the 19th package of sanctions," Wadephul said, referencing the newest round of European Union sanctions, which are anticipated to target Russia's banking and energy sectors.
Poland Shoots Down Drones
Wadephul also expressed Berlin's firm solidarity with its neighbor, Poland, after Russian drones breached its airspace and were subsequently intercepted by Polish and NATO aircraft during Tuesday's overnight assault on Ukraine.
"By doing so, Russia has recklessly risked dangerous escalation," Wadephul stated, adding that European allies are meticulously analyzing the incidents. He confirmed that the matter had been brought before the NATO Council. "We discussed this in the NATO Council in Brussels and are now further examining the matter through security consultations under Article 4 of the NATO Treaty, which Poland has rightfully requested," he added.
In a statement on Wednesday, the Russian Defense Ministry denied any intent to strike Polish targets during the attacks on Ukraine and expressed a willingness to discuss the incident with Polish officials. The ministry did confirm it conducted a major strike targeting Ukrainian military-industrial facilities in the Ivano-Frankivsk, Khmelnytskyi, and Zhytomyr regions, as well as in Vinnytsia and Lviv.
