Russia, Algeria to step up coordination in sector of energy

(MENAFN) Russia and Algeria have agreed to deepen collaboration in the energy sector, pledging closer coordination within OPEC+ and the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), as well as joint initiatives in electricity and resource development, according to reports.

The announcement followed meetings in Algiers between Russian Deputy Energy Minister Roman Marshavin and his Algerian counterpart Mohamed Arkab. Marshavin said, “Among the main priorities that we consider important to promote jointly are the facilitation of free trade in energy resources, technology exchange, protection of critical infrastructure, as well as the expansion of GECF membership and its dialogue partners, including the SCO, APEC, and other forums.”

The Russian Energy Ministry noted that Algeria invited Russian firms to participate in upcoming oil and gas exploration tenders and power generation projects. During the 4th Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF2025) in Algiers, Marshavin also met with energy executives to discuss opportunities for scientific and technical cooperation and congratulated Georges Elombi on his election as Afreximbank President, inviting him to Russian Energy Week 2025 in Moscow on October 15–17.

Russia has been expanding its energy partnerships with African countries in recent years. At the 2023 Russia-Africa Summit in St. Petersburg, Russian officials announced over 30 ongoing energy projects across the continent, with a combined capacity of approximately 3.7 gigawatts. In Algeria, Gazprom International has been working on the El Assel project since 2008, and development plans for the Rhourde Sayah and Rhourde Sayah Nord fields were approved in 2021–22 by the national hydrocarbons agency ALNAFT.
