Russia, Jordan Lock in Goalless Draw in World Cup 2026 Friendly
(MENAFN) Jordan advanced their quest for a maiden FIFA World Cup appearance in 2026 with a hard-fought 0-0 stalemate against Russia on Thursday at Moscow’s Otkrytie Bank Arena.
Under the guidance of coach Jamal Sellami, Jordan started aggressively, applying high pressure and creating the game’s first clear opportunity when Ali Olwan broke free for a one-on-one chance, only to be denied by the Russian goalkeeper.
Russia, sidelined from FIFA and UEFA competitions since 2022 due to the Ukraine conflict, fought back midway through the opening half. Dmitriy Vorobyov tested Jordan’s keeper Yazeed Abulaila with a low-driven shot that required a strong save, followed by a near miss five minutes later.
Jordan nearly took the lead before halftime as Yazan Naimat tried a delicate chip over the advancing keeper, but his attempt was successfully blocked.
Fuelled by their home crowd, Russia intensified their pressure after the break, coming close with a dangerous right-wing cross that found no taker. On the counter, Jordan’s standout Musa Taamari narrowly missed with a long-range effort just over the crossbar in the 75th minute.
In the closing 10 minutes, both teams surged forward seeking a winner, but resolute goalkeeping ensured the score remained 0-0.
Jordan’s Nashama will resume preparations with a friendly against the Dominican Republic in Amman on Tuesday.
