10 Killed, 61 Injured As Freight Train Hits Passenger Bus In Mexico

(MENAFN- Khaama Press) 10 people were killed and 61 injured when a freight train collided with a passenger bus in central Mexico, sparking investigations and calls for improved transport safety.

At least ten people were killed and sixty-one others injured when a freight train collided with a passenger bus in central Mexico, officials said on Monday.

The accident occurred on September 8 along the industrial highway between Atlacomulco, 115 kilometers northwest of Mexico City, and Maravatío in Michoacán state. The impact overturned the bus and left wreckage scattered across the road.

According to the State Prosecutor's Office, the victims included seven women and three men. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals, with several reported in critical condition.

Local media images showed the bus mangled after the collision, while the train was derailed, disrupting traffic and causing long delays along the busy corridor.

Authorities have opened an investigation into the cause of the crash, which took place on one of Mexico's most heavily used transport routes for both cargo and passengers.

Transport accidents are a persistent challenge in Mexico. Government statistics show that in 2023 alone more than 12,000 crashes occurred on federal highways, killing nearly 1,900 people and injuring over 6,400.

The latest tragedy has renewed calls for stricter enforcement of safety standards and greater investment in infrastructure. Officials face growing pressure to prevent similar disasters and improve protections for passengers on Mexico's roads and railways.
