Srinagar – Director Meteorological Department, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad, on Wednesday said the intensity and distribution of rainfall across Jammu and Kashmir has decreased considerably, which is being seen as a positive sign, reducing the likelihood of flooding in the Kashmir Valley.
He said the department had already predicted scattered rainfall activity and that the highest precipitation in the Valley was recorded in Qazigund, where 8–9 mm of rain fell.“The intensity of rainfall has declined, especially in south Kashmir. While intermittent showers can still occur, the kind of downpour we saw earlier will not repeat. Rainfall activity will remain much less compared to previous days,” Dr. Ahmad stated.
He, however, cautioned that temporary waterlogging could be witnessed in low-lying and mountainous regions, particularly during Wednesday night.“Localized waterlogging is possible, but the overall risk of flooding is very low,” he added.
According to the forecast, no major spell of rainfall is expected in the Valley till September 11.“There is a possibility of moderate rainfall in parts of the Jammu region between September 8 and 9, but there will be no continuous or widespread rainfall across J&K till September 12,” Dr. Ahmad said.
Meanwhile, officials said the Jhelum river touched the danger mark of 21.10 ft at Ram Munshi Bagh in Srinagar around 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday. However, water levels are expected to gradually decrease as rainfall has largely subsided.
