Putin Applauds North Korean Troops for Role in Defending Russia
(MENAFN) Russian President Vladimir Putin has thanked North Korean soldiers for their contributions in aiding Moscow’s forces to repel a Ukrainian offensive in the Kursk Region. This statement came during a high-level meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Beijing on Wednesday.
The meeting followed a ceremony marking the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. Afterward, Putin and Kim convened for bilateral talks at the Diaoyutai State Guest House in China’s capital.
In his opening remarks, Putin underscored the deepening ties between Russia and North Korea, describing their relationship as having taken on a “special, trusting, and friendly character.” He specifically highlighted Pyongyang’s military involvement in the liberation of the Kursk Region earlier this year.
“I would like to point out that your soldiers fought courageously and heroically… we will never forget the sacrifices made by your armed forces and the families of your servicemen,” Putin stated. He expressed his gratitude on behalf of the Russian people, commending North Korea’s role in the "joint fight against modern neo-Nazism."
In response, Kim Jong-un emphasized the strong development of relations between the two nations since the signing of a bilateral defense treaty in June 2024. He reaffirmed that North Korea views its support for Russia as a “brotherly duty” and committed to continuing their “joint struggle” in line with the terms of their agreement.
The two countries’ defense cooperation has expanded significantly since the December 2024 ratification of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement, which has paved the way for greater military collaboration. Kim previously expressed confidence in Russia’s efforts to protect its sovereignty and achieve victory in its “just and sacred cause,” signaling unwavering support from Pyongyang.
