Blocked Roads A Major Challenge For Afghanistan After Kunar Quake - UN

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) Blocked roads leading to areas affected by the earthquake in eastern Afghanistan, near the Pakistani border, represent the greatest challenge for relief teams, the United Nations humanitarian coordinator for Afghanistan, Indrika Ratwatte, said on Tuesday.
He noted that rescue efforts in the mountainous regions rely heavily on the use of helicopters.
During a press briefing in Kabul, Ratwatte stated that a large number of landslides and rockfalls occurred, and access was extremely limited for everyone during the first 24 hours after the earthquake. He emphasized that the biggest challenge now is reaching these remote areas, where the roads have been severely damaged.
A statement by the Afghan Red Crescent Society on Tuesday reported that the earthquake, measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale, has claimed 1,124 lives and left 3,251 wounded, while more than 8,000 homes have been destroyed in southeastern Afghanistan.
A 6.2-magnitude earthquake jolted Afghanistan's Kunar province, near the Pakistani border, at a depth of 10 km, inflicting severe human and material losses.
Health authorities warned that all reported figures remain preliminary, as rescuers have yet to reach many of the remote, devastated areas.
