Germany witnesses decline in Asylum applications

(MENAFN) Germany recorded a nearly 60% drop in asylum requests in August compared with the same month last year, official data revealed Tuesday.

The Interior Ministry reported that 7,803 individuals sought asylum in August 2025, a decline from 18,427 in August 2024, marking a decrease of 10,624 applications.

“Our asylum policy change is working. Our measures are successful,” Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt told a newspaper, pointing to stricter border controls introduced by the new government in May shortly after taking office.

"Now it is a matter of tightening up the common European asylum system in order to further reduce the migration pressure on Europe," Dobrindt added.

Historically a top destination for asylum seekers in Europe, Germany has seen shifting migration patterns. In the first half of 2025, Spain led European asylum applications with around 76,000, followed by France with 75,000 and Italy with roughly 63,000. During the same period, Germany received only 61,000 applications, ministry data showed.
