Gaza Starves: Israeli Blockade Kills 185 Palestinians in August

(MENAFN) The Gaza Health Ministry reported on Tuesday that 185 people—including 12 children—died of starvation in August, marking the highest monthly death toll since Israel’s war on the enclave began nearly two years ago.

According to the ministry, 70 of these deaths occurred after the UN-backed hunger monitoring system, Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), officially declared Gaza a famine zone last month.

Health officials painted a grim picture, reporting that more than 43,000 children under five are suffering from malnutrition, along with 55,000 pregnant and breastfeeding women. They also noted a sharp increase in anemia cases among expectant mothers, with the rate now reaching 67%, the highest recorded in years.

The ministry issued a dire warning about catastrophic consequences if emergency food and medical aid are not delivered immediately, emphasizing the rapid increase in hunger-related fatalities.

Since October 2023, Israeli forces have killed more than 63,500 Palestinians in Gaza, leaving the enclave devastated and facing widespread famine.

In a related development, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants last November for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Israel is also confronting a genocide case at the International Court of Justice over its military campaign in the region.
