Landslide Claims Over 1,000 Lives in Sudan

(MENAFN) More than a thousand individuals perished in a landslide caused by intense rainfall in a village located in Central Darfur State, western Sudan, according to an armed faction.

The Sudan Liberation Movement/Army (SLM/A), which holds control over the region, announced that the entire population of Tarsin village in the Marra Mountains lost their lives on August 31 due to the landslide triggered by heavy rains.

The group reported that only a single person survived the calamity, and also noted that the village’s famous citrus groves were completely destroyed.

They urged global organizations and the United Nations to assist with the recovery of bodies buried beneath the earth.

In a separate statement, Darfur’s regional Governor Minni Arko Minnawi referred to the event as “a humanitarian tragedy that exceeds the borders of the region.”

He called on international humanitarian agencies to “intervene urgently to provide support and assistance at this critical moment, as the tragedy is beyond the capacity of our people.”

As of Tuesday morning, the Sudanese government had not confirmed the report.
