Floods In E. Pakistan Affect 2.4 Mln As Death Toll Rises To 41

ISLAMABAD, Sept 2 (KUNA) -- The death toll from floods in the eastern Punjab province of Pakistan has reached to 41 while eight others were injured as more than 2.4 million people were affected, said authorities on Tuesday.
According to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) of Punjab, at least 41 people have lost their lives in the floods, while eight have been injured as the province is receiving ninth spell of monsoon predicted to bring more rains in next 48 hours.
The PDMA confirmed that more than 2.4 million people and 3,200 villages were affected due to severe flooding in the Ravi, Sutlej and Chenab rivers.
Around 999,000 people who had been trapped in the floods were evacuated to safe locations while 780,000 animals were evacuated in rescue and relief activities, said Punjab Relief Commissioner Nabeel Javed, adding that 395 relief camps, 392 medical camps and 336 veterinary camps were established across the province.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecasted more rain in Islamabad, Peshawar, Kohat, Bannu, Dera Ismail Khan, Rawalpindi, Sargodha, Gujranwala, Lahore, Sahiwal, Multan, Dera Ghazi Khan and Bahawalpur divisions in the next 24 hours. (end)
