US Treasury Secretary states US to examine options of sanctioning Russia

(MENAFN) US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that “all options are on the table” as the Trump administration considers additional sanctions on Russia in response to its ongoing attacks on Ukrainian cities.

Speaking in an exclusive interview, Bessent criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin, saying that since the historic Anchorage meeting and subsequent communications with European leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House, Putin has acted contrary to his commitments. “As a matter of fact, he has, in a despicable, despicable manner, increased the bombing campaign,” Bessent said.

“So I think with President (Donald) Trump, all options are on the table, and I think we’ll be examining those very closely this week,” he added.

Following his Alaska summit with Putin on August 15, Trump indicated that within “two weeks” it would become clear whether progress toward ending the Russia-Ukraine war is possible, while also hinting at potential sanctions against Moscow. He warned that a lack of progress could result in “massive sanctions or massive tariffs or both.”

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio later told a news agency that while Trump has the authority to impose new sanctions, doing so could bring the negotiations to an end.
