Amman, Sep. 2 (Petra) -- Jordan has welcomed Belgium's announcement of its intention to officially recognize the State of Palestine during the upcoming session of the United Nations General Assembly later this month.
In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign and Expatriates Affairs praised the declaration by Belgium's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Affairs, and Development Cooperation, Hadja Lahbib, describing the step as a significant move aligned with ongoing international efforts to recognize a sovereign Palestinian state.
The Ministry emphasized that the recognition should be based on the borders of June 4, 1967, with East Jerusalem as the capital, in accordance with relevant United Nations resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Fouad Al-Majali expressed Jordan's appreciation for Belgium's position, calling it a critical development in the fight against efforts to deny the Palestinian people their inalienable right to self-determination and to establish an independent, sovereign state on their national soil.
Al-Majali also underscored the importance of the upcoming Two-State Solution Conference, set to be jointly hosted by Saudi Arabia and France during the UN General Assembly meetings. The conference aims to mobilize greater international support for broader recognition of the State of Palestine as part of the two-state solution, the only viable path to achieving a just and comprehensive peace that ensures security and stability across the region.
The spokesperson reaffirmed Jordan's firm commitment to working closely with Arab nations and international partners to uphold the Palestinian people's right to freedom, justice, and statehood, while continuing efforts to end the occupation and advance the cause of peace.
