Vance declares willingness to lead US in case of ‘tragedy’

(MENAFN) U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance has expressed his readiness to take over the presidency if a “terrible tragedy” were to happen to President Donald Trump. Speaking to USA Today, Vance highlighted the valuable experience he’s gained during his seven months in office, describing it as solid “on-the-job training.”

When asked about the possibility of succeeding Trump—who, at 79, is one of the oldest presidents in U.S. history—Vance emphasized that Trump remains vigorous and committed. “He’s the last one to go to bed and the first making phone calls in the morning,” Vance said, expressing confidence that Trump will complete his term and accomplish significant achievements for the country.

However, Vance added, “if, God forbid, something terrible happens, I believe the training I’ve received over the past 200 days has prepared me well.”

Trump survived an assassination attempt in July 2024 at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, where he was grazed near his ear and others were injured. The attacker and a bystander were killed. Another plot was foiled in September at Trump’s golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida, when an armed suspect was stopped before firing.

Earlier this year, Vance suggested he might run for president in 2028 but said he would discuss the plan with Trump first, noting many things could change over the next few years. Trump recently remarked that Vance is likely the frontrunner for the Republican nomination in 2028 and also mentioned Secretary of State Marco Rubio as another possible successor.

Before becoming vice president, Vance was a U.S. senator from Ohio (2023–2025) and is known for his venture capital career and bestselling memoir Hillbilly Elegy. Rubio, a former senator from Florida and 2016 presidential candidate, has also gained national recognition in Republican circles.
