Doha: Ethiopia is seeking a strong partnership with Qatar as it prepares to host the second edition of the Africa Climate Summit (ACS2) on September 8–10 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopian Ambassador to Qatar H E Faisal Ali Ibrahim has said.

Addressing the media yesterday, the Ethiopian Ambassador noted that the summit is a pivotal event aimed at redefining Africa's role in global climate action.

“The summit will shift the narrative from Africa as a victim of climate change to a continent offering innovative solutions, with Ethiopia's Green Legacy Initiative (GLI) as a shining example. Qatar, with its commitment to sustainability under National Vision 2030, is invited to play a key role in this transformative gathering,” he said.

He added that Qatar's sustainability efforts align closely with ACS2's objectives. Qatar National Vision 2030 prioritides renewable energy, water security, and environmental stewardship, positioning Qatar as a leader in clean energy and climate finance.

“Ethiopia recognises Qatar's investments in green infrastructure and its advocacy for global partnerships that balance economic growth with environmental protection. Both nations share a vision for food security, renewable energy, and equitable climate negotiations, making Qatar a vital partner for ACS2,” he said.

According to the Ambassador Ali Ibrahim, the summit will foster collaboration between Africa and the Gulf, with Ethiopia inviting Qatar's government, private sector, academia, youth, and civil society to participate.

“This partnership aims to bridge the climate finance gap through innovative investments, strengthen Africa-Gulf cooperation, and drive global resilience. ACS2's vision is clear: moving from aid to investment, promises to action, and vulnerability to resilience.” He noted that Africa faces disproportionate climate challenges despite contributing less than four percent of global greenhouse gas emissions.

“Devastating droughts, floods, desertification, and land degradation threaten livelihoods, while a $2.5 trillion financing gap hinders the continent's $3 trillion climate commitments by 2030. ACS2 seeks to address this by promoting investment, innovation, and South-South cooperation, amplifying Africa's voice ahead of COP30,” the Ethiopian Ambassador said.

He added that Ethiopia's leadership is exemplified by the GLI, launched in 2019, which has seen over 48 billion seedlings planted, with a goal of 50 billion by 2026.

This ambitious initiative, he said, has restored 11 million hectares of degraded land, increased forest cover from 17% to 23.6%, reduced soil erosion by 208 million tonnes annually, and created over 183,000 rural jobs.

“Beyond reforestation, GLI enhances biodiversity, water systems, food security, and economic resilience. At ACS2, Ethiopia will showcase GLI and other African innovations as models for global climate solutions.”

As Ethiopia prepares to welcome the world, the summit offers a global opportunity to build a climate-resilient future. By joining hands with Ethiopia, the African Union, and the international community, Qatar can help shape a sustainable, equitable world.

“The media's role in amplifying this message is crucial, ensuring that ACS2's call for action resonates in Qatar and beyond. Together, shared commitments can turn into tangible outcomes, charting a path toward a greener, more just future,” he said.

More information on ACS2 and participation opportunities are available on the official summit website or through the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
