I am Professor of Human Rights Law and Research Director for Law in the School of Law and Social Sciences at Middlesex University. I have an interest in human rights implementation and the relationship between human rights and democratic governance. I am a Trustee of Just Fair, which campaigns for the legal recognition of socio-economic rights in the UK.

I have been principal investigator or co-investigator on research projects funded by the ESRC, Nuffield Foundation; the Joseph Rowntree Foundation and Equality and Human Rights Commission.

I previously worked as a commissioner, editor, broadcast journalist and journalism trainer with the BBC World Service (1991-2010).
