First Chinese Cultural Heritage And AI Innovation Competition Successfully Concludes At NTU Chinese Heritage Centre
Designed for youth aged 8 to 18 who are passionate about Chinese culture, the competition encouraged participants to harness AI tools to tell cultural stories, reimagine traditions, and push the boundaries of creative expression. Nearly 50 contestants from China, Singapore, and other countries and regions submitted more than 60 original projects, delivering a vibrant response to the call for“Tech meets Heritage” in the age of AI.
Themed around intangible heritage, Chinese literature, and folk traditions, contestants explored creative interpretations through technologies such as coding, AI-generated visuals, speech recognition, and interactive design. Some reimagined Chinese myths using ChatGPT; others applied AI vision to educate about cultural artifacts; one team even built an immersive game inspired by traditional Chinese aesthetics-breathing life and playfulness into cultural heritage.
The atmosphere was electric, with contestants passionately presenting their ideas and judges offering incisive questions and feedback. The three expert judges evaluated all projects based on cultural depth, AI application, originality, and presentation impact, ensuring a high standard of excellence throughout the judging process.
In his opening remarks, Professor Yow Cheun Hoe, Director of the Chinese Heritage Centre at Nanyang Technological University, emphasized:“AI is not merely a tool-it represents a new possibility to converse with tradition and shape the future. It is essential for Chinese heritage to enter the language systems and technological mediums of the next generation.”
The competition concluded with the presentation of AI Innovation Excellence Awards (3 winners), Thematic Honor Awards (10 winners), and multiple Outstanding Participation Awards. Beyond accolades, the event highlighted how the younger generation is redefining cultural engagement in a digital world-through experimentation, creativity, and pride in heritage.
This competition served as both a platform for innovation and a space for intergenerational, cross-cultural dialogue. As AI continues to evolve, we look forward to more youth-driven efforts to illuminate Chinese cultural heritage and tell its stories in new, compelling ways.
