UK Summons Russian Amb. Over Ukraine Strikes

LONDON, Aug 28 (KUNA) -- The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office has summoned the Russian Ambassador following the abhorrent strikes on Kyiv overnight, which killed many Ukrainian civilians and damaged the British Council and EU Delegation offices, a Foreign Office statement said Thursday.
The UK condemns in the strongest terms these outrageous attacks on Ukrainians and the damage done to the British Council and EU Delegation, said a Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office Spokesperson said.
Russia's increasing attacks on Ukrainian civilians and cities, including Kyiv, are an escalation of the war and deeply irresponsible and are further sabotaging international peace efforts, noted the statement, adding "We have made clear to the Russians that such actions will only harden UK and Western resolve to support Ukraine and bring an end to this unjustified war.
Russia must stop this senseless killing and destruction immediately."
The British Council, which works to promote cultural relationships and educational opportunities between the UK and other countries, said a guard working at its office was injured in the attack and being treated in hospital.
In a statement it said: "Following last night's attack on Kyiv, our British Council office has been severely damaged and will be closed to visitors until further notice.
"While there may be some delays in our responses, our work with our Ukrainian partners in education and culture continues."
The Ukrainian military said Russia's attack involved almost 600 drones and more than 30 ballistic and cruise missiles, marking its first combined attack on the Ukrainian capital in weeks.
Alongside the 17 killed and damage to the British Council building, dozens more were injured and a five-storey residential building was destroyed. (end)
