US Union Station to be taken over by Transportation Department
(MENAFN) U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy announced Wednesday that the department intends to take over management of Union Station, the nation’s capital’s major transit hub.
“Instead of being a point of pride, Washington's Union Station has fallen into disrepair. By reclaiming station management, we will help make this city safe and beautiful at a fraction of the cost,” Duffy said in a statement.
The announcement coincided with a celebration alongside Amtrak officials for the launch of the new Acela trainsets, a high-speed rail service connecting Washington, D.C., New York, Boston, and other major cities, reaching speeds of up to 160 miles (257.5 km) per hour.
While the U.S. Transportation Department has owned Union Station since the early 1980s, its operational control has gradually diminished through various agreements and leases, the department noted.
