Lithuania’s Parliament Endorses New Premier
(MENAFN) On Tuesday, Lithuania’s legislative body gave its backing to the newly nominated candidate for prime minister, following a restructuring of the country’s ruling alliance, according to a news agency.
The endorsement went to Inga Ruginiene, a member of the Social Democratic Party, who was selected by the recently established coalition government.
The appointment comes after the Social Democrats (LSDP) reached a political accord on Monday to collaborate with two other groups in forming a new governing alliance.
Although Ruginiene has received parliamentary approval, her role will become official only after President Gitanas Nauseda signs a decree and she takes the oath before the legislative body.
The LSDP formalized the coalition pact with the Nemunas Dawn political faction and the Lithuanian Farmers, Green and Christian Families Union’s parliamentary bloc.
This new alliance secures a majority, controlling 82 out of the 141 seats in the parliament.
The Social Democrats maintain the dominant position within the coalition, holding 52 seats.
As part of their joint agenda, the coalition has committed to enhancing national protection from foreign dangers, securing appropriate defense resources, supporting local enterprises, and creating better conditions for family life.
Additionally, they have pledged to increase excise taxes on tobacco, alcoholic beverages, electronic cigarettes, and related items.
The agreement also includes a strategy aimed at addressing and reducing xenophobic attitudes.
“We commit to swiftly and effectively implementing the necessary measures to ensure Lithuania's security needs and provide strong support for Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression and on its path toward integration into the European Union and NATO,” the coalition agreement emphasized.
