Dr Phoebe Runciman (Division of Sport and Exercise Medicine, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences) is an Exercise Scientist and Biokineticist with a PhD from the University of Cape Town in 2015. She is currently an Associate Professor and the Research Chair for the Department of Exercise, Sport and Lifestyle Medicine. She specialises in adapted disability and Para sport, injury and illness epidemiology as well as biomechanics in athletes and non-athletes with disability, with a strong focus on advancing Para sport in low-resourced settings and low-and-middle income countries. She leads multiple international research projects and has initiated the African Para athlete network, providing collaborative opportunities for healthcare professionals working with Para athletes in Africa. She works with the International Paralympic Committee and Commonwealth Games GAPS Africa program and is a member of the Concussion in Para Sport (CIPS) and the Sustainable Prosthetic Assistance for Resilient Kids in Youthful South Africa (SPARKY) international expert working groups. She is an editorial board member of the African Journal of Disability with a focus on promoting research in physical activity for individuals with disabilities in Africa. She is a recipient of the prestigious International Olympic Committee Scientific and Medical Research Fund and two British Journal of Sports Medicine Global Research grants for her ongoing work with Para athletes from low-resourced countries. She is also the recipient of Stellenbosch University social impact funding for Framing Mobility, a social impact project and research platform bringing the sport of frame running for children with disabilities to South Africa for the first time.
