Jo-Anne completed a Wellcome Trust-funded Clinical Research Training Fellowship in respiratory developmental biology at the University of Cambridge in 2018, where she gained her PhD. Jo-Anne joined ARU School of Medicine in 2018, initially leading in curriculum design and delivery of several disciplines including embryology, genetics, and paediatrics.

From 2019, as Phase 2 Lead at the School of Medicine, Jo-Anne developed the inaugural years 2 and 3 of the MBChB programme. From 2020, as Assessment Lead, Jo-Anne developed and continues to lead all aspects of Undergraduate Assessments at the School of Medicine.

In her role as Research and Innovation Lead for the School, Jo-Anne has developed Essex's first postgraduate Clinical Academic Training pathway, and through successful funding bids from the NIHR and Wellcome Trust, has developed multiple opportunities for undergraduate medical students in research and innovation. She is currently leading on the development of home-grown research at the School, which includes a new Primary Care Research Centre, and the Institute of Excellence in Robotic Surgery.

Jo-Anne became Head of Undergraduate Medicine at ARU in February 2024 and through this role leads on all aspects of the MBChB programme design and delivery, including the new Medical Degree Doctor Apprenticeship.

Clinically, Jo-Anne's expertise is within Paediatric Respiratory Medicine, most recently developing an ambulatory Paediatric Sleep Service at ESNEFT, which provides accessible diagnostics in sleep-disordered breathing for patients across Essex.
