Dominik Piehlmaier is an Associate Professor in Marketing (Department of Strategy and Marketing) at the University of Sussex Business School and a Visiting Fellow at the University of Cambridge Judge Business School. He holds a Ph.D. in Consumer Behavior (Department of Consumer Science) with a minor in Quantitative Methods (Department of Educational Psychology) from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Dominik studied at Yale (Department of Economics) and was a predoctoral fellow at Stanford University (Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research). He was an MRC fellow at the University of Oxford (Bennett Institute for Applied Data Science).

His research focuses on overconfidence, a cognitive bias that describes the tendency to overestimate one's skills and impact on uncertain outcomes, while underestimating or ignoring the role of risk and ambiguity. Dominik's research is embedded in the judgment and decision-making literature. He applies advanced quantitative methods to experimental and large secondary data to explore the phenomenon of overconfidence. Dominik is a Bayesian statistician and interested in quasi-experimental models for national electronic health records. He received the 2023 Research Excellence Award for Emerging Scholars.

Dominik's research has received considerable media attention and was covered by the (US) Wall Street Journal, Cosmopolitan, CNBC, the Daily Mail, the Telegraph, and Sky News among other outlets. He is an inducted member of Phi Kappa Phi, the oldest and most selective honor society for all academic disciplines in the United States.
