As a Chemist, I am passionate about environmental research. I started my journey in 1996 at the Universitat de Barcelona (UB, Spain), where I began to work in a research team studying membrane receptors and intercellular communication and have not stopped since. I then pursued an MRes, DEA and PhD in Analytical Chemistry, where I investigated foodborne carcinogens from the Maillard reaction in food and biological fluids using separation science and mass spectrometry. During this time, research stays at Lund University (Food and Analytical Chemistry departments) had a great impact on my PhD and beyond. Following my Ph.D., the Marie Curie Programme allowed me to pursue a postdoctoral research position on the development of materials for cleaning water from emerging pollutants at MAST Carbon International Ltd. (2009-2011) and subsequently, I moved to the Nano Science and Nanotechnology Group at the University of Brighton with an individual Marie Curie Fellowship, where I gained in-depth experience in materials science for environmental remediation (2011-2013).

I joined Kingston University as a lecturer in Analytical and Forensic Chemistry in 2013. I have a team working on new analytical approaches for the study of contaminants in the environment and their remediation, including making accessible water to poorer communities (SDG6). My research is very collaborative and international, and I am an honorary Associate Professor at UCL and honorary Professor at Al-Farabi National Kazakh University. An important experience in my career has been to create and maintain business incubators in Ukraine with fantastic collaborators and British Council funding (2018-2023). I think training students for a sustainable future to contribute meaningfully to society is of paramount importance. My research informs organisations such as the EPA (Irish), Royal Society of Chemistry Science Policy Programme, the Royal Society, UN Global Environmental Outlook-7, and UNEP Environmental Effects Assessment Panel.
